What a home battery actually costs in South Australia
Battery pricing is confusing because installers quote the figure before rebates, after rebates, with or without solar, and with or without backup. Here’s a straight breakdown of installed prices for the most common system sizes in SA, after the federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate and the SA REPS Virtual Power Plant incentive are applied.
| Battery size | Before rebates | After rebates (indicative) | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5kWh | $8,000 – $11,000 | $5,000 – $8,000 | Smaller homes, modest evening use |
| 10kWh | $13,000 – $16,000 | $8,000 – $12,000 | Most SA family homes – the sweet spot |
| 13kWh+ | $16,000 – $20,000 | $11,000 – $15,000 | Large homes, high evening use, backup |

The rebates that bring the price down
Figures current as of May 2026. The SA Home Battery Scheme has closed. Source.
On a 10kWh battery, the federal rebate is worth about $2,520 and the SA REPS Virtual Power Plant incentive adds up to $2,050 – so more than $4,500 comes off the sticker price. The federal amount steps down at the start of 2027, so the after-rebate prices above will rise.
What drives the price up or down
- Battery brand and chemistry – premium brands cost more but often have longer warranties and better software.
- Backup capability – a battery that keeps running during a blackout needs extra hardware (a backup gateway), adding $1,500 to $3,000.
- Switchboard upgrades – older homes sometimes need switchboard or meter work before a battery can be added.
- Solar at the same time – bundling solar and a battery is usually cheaper per kW than doing them separately.
- VPP choice – joining an approved Virtual Power Plant unlocks the REPS incentive but commits your battery to grid support.
Is it cheaper to add a battery to existing solar?
Usually yes. If you already have solar panels, a battery-only retrofit avoids the cost of new panels and inverter work, so you’re paying for the battery and its installation alone. The federal rebate applies to the battery whether or not you add solar at the same time. If you don’t have solar yet, a combined solar-plus-battery system is better value than buying them separately later.

Home battery cost FAQs
How much is a 10kWh battery in SA after rebates?
Roughly $8,000 to $12,000 installed after the federal rebate (about $2,520 on 10kWh) and the SA REPS VPP incentive (up to $2,050). The exact figure depends on the brand, your switchboard, and whether you want backup power.
Does the price include installation?
The after-rebate ranges on this page are installed prices, including standard mounting and electrical work. Switchboard upgrades or backup hardware are extra and vary by home – a quote will spell them out.
Will battery prices drop if I wait?
Battery hardware has been getting cheaper, but the federal rebate steps down at the start of 2027, which pushes the after-rebate price the other way. For most SA homes the rebate reduction outweighs expected hardware savings in the short term.
Is a cheaper battery a false economy?
Sometimes. The lowest quote can skip backup capability, use a shorter-warranty product, or under-size the system. Compare warranty, usable capacity and what’s actually included – not just the headline price.
