Solar battery rebates in Berri & the central Riverland
Berri is the commercial heart of the Riverland, on the Murray amid citrus, vine and irrigation country. Summers are long and hot – among the warmest in the state – so air-conditioning runs hard, and many properties also run pumps, cool rooms or sheds that lift daily power use. With high SA power prices and an excellent solar resource almost year-round, a home battery is well suited to storing cheap daytime solar and running the house on it through the expensive evening peak.
The rebates a Berri home can claim (2026)
Figures current as of May 2026. The SA Home Battery Scheme has closed. Source.
Worked example – 10kWh battery in Berri (5343): about $2,520 from the federal rebate plus up to $2,050 from the SA REPS incentive for joining an approved Virtual Power Plant – around $4,500+ off the installed price. Properties with pumps or sheds may benefit from a larger system.
Battery payback in the Riverland
With extreme summer heat and high daily loads, a typical Berri home with solar commonly sees a rebated 10kWh battery pay back in the 6 to 9 year range, and at the faster end where cooling and pumps run hard. Bigger loads can justify a larger system – an installer can model it from your bills.
| System | Indicative installed price (after rebates) | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| 5kWh battery (retrofit) | $5,000 – $8,000 | Smaller homes, modest evening use |
| 10kWh battery (retrofit) | $8,000 – $12,000 | Most Berri homes with heavy cooling and pump loads |
| 6.6kW+ solar + 13kWh battery | $15,000 – $20,000 | Properties with irrigation pumps or sheds |

Berri battery rebate FAQs
Will a battery handle the Riverland heat?
Modern batteries are built for Australian conditions, but in extreme heat a shaded, ventilated location and a battery rated for hot climates matter. A good installer will advise on siting and the right product.
Is the SA Home Battery Scheme still available?
No. South Australia’s Home Battery Scheme closed in 2025. Riverland homes now access the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program plus the REPS Virtual Power Plant incentive – both open in 2026.
How much is the battery rebate in Berri?
About $252 per usable kWh for the first 14kWh federally – roughly $2,520 on a 10kWh battery – plus up to $2,050 through the SA REPS VPP incentive. The federal amount steps down at the start of 2027.
Do I need solar already?
No. You can add a battery to existing solar or install both together. The federal rebate applies to the battery either way.
