Short version: Same 13.5kWh storage, very different machines. The Powerwall 3 adds a built-in solar inverter, roughly double the continuous power, and cheaper expansion – and the Powerwall 2 was discontinued in Australia in January 2026, so for new installs the question has answered itself. Where it still matters: second-hand units, existing PW2 owners weighing an upgrade, and homes with a recent inverter that suits an AC-coupled battery.

Why the power difference is the big one

Capacity tells you how long a battery lasts; power tells you what it can actually run. At 5kW continuous, a Powerwall 2 runs a normal evening load but strains when the ducted air-con, oven and pool pump stack up – at which point you’re buying peak grid power anyway. The Powerwall 3’s ~10kW carries practically any single household load pattern, which matters double in backup mode during a blackout: it’s the difference between “the essentials circuit” and “the whole house keeps going”.

AC-coupled vs integrated: who each suits

The Powerwall 2’s one structural advantage was AC coupling: it bolts onto any existing solar system without touching your inverter. The Powerwall 3 replaces or bypasses your solar inverter instead – elegant for new systems, slightly wasteful if your existing inverter is young. Should existing Powerwall 2 owners upgrade?

Almost never on savings alone – your PW2 keeps earning, and a healthy unit has years of warranty left. The upgrade case is power: if 5kW limits your backup or evening loads, a Powerwall 3 (or adding capacity) changes that. Note the federal rebate applies to new battery capacity, and the REPS incentive is once per premises – get advice before reshuffling hardware you’ve already claimed on.

Is the Powerwall 2 still available in Australia?

No – Australian industry sources report it was discontinued from sale in January 2026 and removed from the approved product list for new rebated installs. Existing units keep their warranty and VPP eligibility.

Is the Powerwall 3 better than the Powerwall 2?

For new installs, yes in almost every dimension: about double the continuous power, an integrated solar inverter, safer LFP chemistry and cheaper expansion. The PW2’s one advantage – simple AC coupling to existing solar – is better served today by other AC-coupled or modular batteries.

Do Powerwall 2 and 3 have the same capacity?

Yes – both store 13.5kWh usable. The differences are power output, the inverter, chemistry and expansion options.

Can I add a Powerwall 3 to my existing Powerwall 2?

They don’t stack as one system – the PW3 ecosystem uses its own expansion packs. An installer can design around both, but mixing generations is rarely the clean answer.
